International Day 2018

International Day: For Social Justices

December 8tt, 2017 (Friday)





Leading up to the day:

- Students in World History (Grade 10) and World History II (Grade 11) will be working on a unit project where they choose a country and one of the 8 Millennium Development goals and demonstrate their understanding of the history of the issue in the country, what has been done, current policies, and possible solutions.

- Students in Grade 12 prepare for the International Food Court activity.

- All student create cardboard bricks with messages of social injustices in the world that they learnt about or that they have seen and experienced in their own lives.

07.30 AM

- Students go to their homeroom classes to take attendance

- G. 10 and 11 students prepare their projects with their group members

- G. 10 and 11 students are given their International Day passports

- G. 12 are given project rubrics and are given instructions on how to judge projects

07.45 AM

- Students meet in their assigned classrooms (based on their countries) to set up their projects and decorations (22 rooms with 4 projects in each room)

- G. 12 students set up their International Food Court stalls (pre-set up only as the activity will start in the afternoon)

08.50 AM

- G. 10 and G. 11 students present their projects to the judges (teachers)

- students from each group take turns to visit other rooms with their individual “passports” to learn about other students’ projects and receive stamps from passport control (a teacher stationed in each room with some type of activity for students to do before they are given the stamp)

- each student must visit 5 country rooms at least

- G. 12 are also judging G. 10 and G. 11 products for the Student Choice Award

- each group of judges visits 11 rooms

- judges spend 10 minutes in each room = 110 minutes

- 3 minutes passing time from room to room = 30 minutes

- total time = 140 minutes

11.30 AM

- Students have lunch break

12.00 PM

- G. 12 students organize international food court

- The MUIDS Social Justice Barrier Wall build begins

- Each individual student builds a cardboard brick with messages about social injustices around the world (done before the day). The bricks from all students are used to build a single “Social Justice Barrier” Wall.

- International performances

- Opening performance from Mr. Landon Callahan, followed by performances from interested clubs and individuals (possibly Folk Song Club, Spanish Club, and others)

14.30 PM

- Project awards announced

- Closing Ceremony

- MUIDS Social Justice Barrier Wall torn down
