Meet the goals

In August 2019, I began my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Silapakorn University in Thailand. The course focuses primarily on four areas: Curriculum Design, Instructional Design, Research Methodology, and Supervision. I learned about various learning philosophies, theories, and concepts, as well as strategies, which enabled me to incorporate some of them into my own classes this year. Furthermore, I have experience organizing intensive courses both online and offline, which has greatly improved my teaching skills.

Furthermore, because of the Covid-19 situation in 2020, I had the opportunity to design a short online learning course for my students for two months. I learned how to incorporate technology and learning management systems into my classroom. The outcomes were favorable. I was able to promote self-directed learning in the classroom, which allows students to regulate their own learning and project work while the teacher provides useful feedback.

Here is an example of feedback provided to students through online instructions.

Focus of Observation: Facilitation of group work

February 19, 2020

Commendations:

  • You did an excellent job of being mobile around the classroom, and sending the message that not only are you holding students accountable for doing good work during this time, but that you are also available to assist them as needed. Being behind the desk is the absolute worst place from which to teach, so it is pleasing to see that you avoided that pedagogical trap entirely.

  • I liked your exit slip for a couple of reasons:

    • One concern about group work is the tendency of some students to allow their peers to do most of the labor, while they still end up getting the credit. By having an exit slip requirement that all students have to answer all questions, and from their own perspective, you help ensure that every student has the same base understanding of their chosen company, which thus requires that every student has done an appropriate amount of research on their own.

    • You also asked a good number of questions on the exit slip, and this allows you to get a fairly in-depth understanding of what the students know, but also how much work they have put in.
